How To Get Involved In Local Politics
I get asked the question all the time, ”How do I get involved?” The days where the definition of being “involved in politics” was to simply show up to vote are over. People are overwhelmed and lost when it comes to how to get involved and help protect our Republic. I often wonder why this isn’t taught yearly in school from 7th-12th grade. I do not mean in a partisan and brainwashing way as we have seen happen in our public school systems; I mean in a general way.
In this article, I hope to lay out an easy-to-understand path to getting involved in local politics. I want to provide the basic steps for someone to take when their history of involvement has been voting at the most. Once you get your toe in the water, you will get sucked into deeper levels of involvement naturally.
The most basic step is to make sure you are registered to vote! If you are not registered, CLICK HERE to do so. You can also register through a Voter Deputy Registrar. Now that your registration is complete, I will give you 3 easy action items to launch your involvement in local politics.
PLUG INTO YOUR PRECINCT
The first place to plug in is your precinct. Your precinct, based on your address, needs you! Your precinct number is located in the link above when you check your voter registration status.
Now that you know your precinct number, find out if there is a Precinct Chair (PC) in place or if the seat is vacant. A Precinct Chair is the person who is leading the effort to get out the vote in your neighborhoods. They also help to educate voters on the issues and candidates. PC's also work as election judges and help staff elections. This is so important. Tarrant County Precinct Chair vacancies and contact information can be found HERE. If a Precinct Chair is not listed, that means it’s vacant and you should consider becoming one! There is a vetting process to become a PC. If you have been absent in primary voting, get a few of those under your belt before taking the step to becoming a Precinct Chair. If you are not in Tarrant County, you can find this information by contacting your county’s Republican Party office. Precinct Chairs work with volunteers to help the Party with things like block walking, phone banking, and working elections. Don’t be intimidated by these activities. You will not be alone, you will end up having fun and making some good friends in the process.
GET TO KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES
Find a candidate you like and help them! Donate your time or your money...or both! They need your help with block walking, and phone banking and if you are willing to host a meet and greet for them in your neighborhood it would be beneficial!
SHOW UP TO MEETINGS
Show up to local school board meetings and city council meetings and speak out when something isn’t right. Their meeting agendas can be found online. Organizations like For Liberty and Justice will help educate you on actions to take when things of importance are happening in our community. They will let you know when to contact your representatives regarding issues or legislation. Join them in marches and rallies. They will help you get involved and stay engaged.
At the end of my life I want to say I did everything I could to protect our God-given freedoms…don’t you?
